Transitioning to a New World – An Analytical Perspective

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at the Silicon India Business Intelligence Conference. The topic I chose for the discussion was focused on providing the BI & Analytics perspective for companies transitioning to a new world.

The gist of my presentation is given below:

1)      First, established the fact that the world indeed is changing by showing some statistics:

  • Data Deluge: Amount of digital data created in the world right now stands at 7 Zettabytes per annum (1 Zettabyte = 1 Trillion Terabytes)
  • Social Media: Facebook has touched 1 Billion users which makes it the 3rd largest country in the world
  • Cloud: Tremendous amount of cloud infrastructure is being created
  • Mobility: There are 4.7 billion mobile subscribers which covers 65% of world population

2)      Enterprises face a very different marketplace due to the profound changes taking place in the way people buy, sell, interact with one another, spend their leisure time etc.

3)      To ensure that BI can help business navigate the new normal, there are 3 key focus areas.

  • Remove Bottlenecks – Give business what they want
  • Enhance Intelligence
  • End to End Visibility by strengthening the fundamentals

For each of the 3 areas mentioned above, I gave some specific examples of the trends in the BI space.

1)      For Removing Bottlenecks, the impact of in-memory and columnar databases were elaborated.

2)      For enhancing intelligence, working with unstructured data and using big data techniques were discussed.

3)      For the 3rd point, the focus was on strengthening the fundamentals in the BI landscape.

Please do check out my complete presentation at http://bit.ly/VLDDfF and let me know your views.

Thanks for reading.

Big Data and the Goldilocks Principle

I was inspired to write this post (I can hear all of you sighing ‘Yet Another on Big Data’) due to another ‘Big’ reason. I listened to a TED (www.ted.com) talk by David Christian titled ‘The History of the World in 18 minutes’ in which he narrates a complete history of the universe, from the Big Bang to the Internet, in a riveting 18 minutes. This is “Big History”: an enlightening, wide-angle look at complexity, life and humanity, set against our slim share of the cosmic timeline. Check out his website – www.bighistoryproject.com , and I promise you that this ‘Big’ has nothing to do with Big Data, as we know it. But what got me interested in his talk is his reference to the ‘Goldilocks moment’ – a moment so precisely right for certain thresholds to be reached to enable higher forms of complexity (life) in the universe.

That got me thinking – Is Big Data the ‘Goldilocks moment’ for organizations with respect to analytics helping them towards achieving better business outcomes?

I think the answer is ‘Yes’ and this stems from the following hypothesis – An organization can utilize analytics for better business outcomes if:

a)      they have more data points to be analyzed (volume)

b)      have the ability to perform sophisticated analysis on large and diverse datasets (variety)

c)       and can do it at a much faster rate than before (velocity)

In that context, I really liked the picture (given below) from one of the IBM articles, which illustrates how Big Data when synthesized  properly along with standard transactional data can help in better business decision making (in this case, it was Fraud Detection)

Source: IBM – Understanding Big Data by Paul Zikopoulos

On the other hand, the exponential increase in processing power of CPUs, the steep fall in memory prices and high bandwidth availability, have enabled the practical use of Big Data techniques. From the human angle, people are creating digital data, viz. social media chatter, video sharing, blogs, mobility etc. at a rapid pace that organizations (with help of Big Data techniques, of course) can potentially solve the ‘Innovators Dilemma’ by providing new products and services that the consumers did not ask for simply because they couldn’t figure out what they actually want.

All in all, I think we are at a precise moment in history (the Goldilocks moment) where organizations can greatly increase their ability to provide better products & services for their consumers using Big Data techniques.

Short-term contracts give mid-cap IT cos new lease of life

With the duration of outsourcing deals getting shorter, deals worth nearly USD 85 billion are up for renegotiations this year, reports CNBC-TV18’s Shreya Roy.

Shreya Roy, Reporter, CNBC TV18

Midcap IT players may get a new lease of life. With the duration of outsourcing deals getting shorter, deals worth nearly USD 85 billion are up for renegotiations this year, reports CNBC-TV18’s Shreya Roy.

Over the last few years, uncertain times have forced IT companies to go in for more short-term contracts. For mid-cap IT companies, this may have been a blessing in disguise.

Data from outsourcing advisory firm TPI says that around 700 contracts will be up for renegotiations this fiscal year, compared to 530 last year.

“There is a significant reduction in the tenure of contracts as they were originally signed. Compared to 10 years ago, when 500 of these were being done, there are 1000 a year. The tenure has gone down to five years instead of seven, so a lot of deals are naturally coming back to the market as renewals. In itself, this is a very large opportunity,” said Siddharth Pai, partner and MD at TPI India.

For many IT players, this may be just what the doctor ordered. After all, renewals account for almost 65% of the outsourcing market. Advisory firm Everest estimates that by October 2013, deals worth nearly USD 85 billion will be up for renewal.

These include a contract between HP and Bank of America, a mega deal from Shell group which is currently with AT&T, HP, and T-Systems, a blue cross blue shield deal with Dell and Manu Life's deal with IBM.

Many of these contracts are expected to be broken up into smaller chunks, as outsourcers are looking increasingly towards multi-sourcing. Analysts say this could work in the favour of the smaller players, especially those like Mindtree and Hexaware, which have been focusing on developing niche capabilities to help differentiate from larger players.

Configuring Oracle Unified Directory (OUD) 11g as a Directory Server

I used Oracle Unified Directory (OUD) Version 11.1.1.5.0 during my test deployment locally here. I tried to collect as much information possible in this post for configuration.

Ideally, there are three possible configuration options for OUD:

  • as a Directory Server
  • as a Replication Server
  • as a Proxy Server

Directory Server provides the main LDAP functionality in OUD. Proxy server can be used for proxying LDAP requests. And Replication Server is used for replication from one OUD to another OUD or even to another ODSEE (earlier Sun Java Directory) server. You can my previous posts on OUD here and here.

In this post, we will talk about configuring OUD after installation as a Directory Server. You can read about OUD installation in my previous post here.

Once installation is completed, you will find following files in $ORACLE_HOME Directory.

-rwxr-x---  1 oracle oracle 1152 May 17 11:16 oud-proxy-setup -rwxr-x---  1 oracle oracle 1482 May 17 11:16 oud-proxy-setup.bat -rwxr-x---  1 oracle oracle 1180 May 17 11:16 oud-replication-gateway-setup -rwxr-x---  1 oracle oracle 1510 May 17 11:16 oud-replication-gateway-setup.bat -rwxr-x---  1 oracle oracle 1141 Aug 10 16:50 oud-setup -rwxr-x---  1 oracle oracle 1538 May 17 11:15 oud-setup.bat

In this listing, .bat files are used in windows. So, In Linux (that is what I am using), we will be using following files.

  • oud-setup – To configure Directory Server
  • oud-replication-gateway-setup – To configure Directory Replication Server
  • oud-proxy-setup – To Setup Proxy Server

You can run the script shown below.

$ ./oud-setup OUD Instance location successfully created - /u01/oracle/Middleware/Oracle_OUD1/../asinst_2 Launching graphical setup... The graphical setup launch failed. Now, your newly created OUD Directory Server is running in the machine. You can check this with the ldapsearch command.

$ ldapsearch -h localhost -p 1389 -D “cn=Directory Manager” -w ebs_t3st -s sub -b “dc=example,dc=com” “(objectclass=*)” cn
dn: dc=example,dc=com

$

LDAP Search command will return one entry as shown above.

Here are some of my Observations:

  • If you want to use the port 389/636 for your Directory Server, then you need to run the setup using root user. Then you need to use start-ds and stop-ds commands using root user only.
  • There are six scripts to setup OUD components (three for unix/linux and three for windows environments)
  • You can setup a new TLS based certificate as part of configuring a new Directory Server.

Okay, thats all for now. We will meet in another post. Until then

Business Focused Analytics – The Starting Point

Having been a Business Intelligence practitioner for the last 13 years, there has never been a more exciting time to practice this art, as organizations increasingly realize that a well implemented BI & Analytics system can provide great competitive advantage for them. This leads us to the question of – ‘What is a well implemented BI system?’ Let us follow the Q&A below.

Q: What is a well implemented BI system?

A: A well implemented BI system is one that is completely business focused.

Q: Well, that doesn’t make it any easier. How can we have BI that is completely business focused?

A: BI & Analytics becomes completely business focused when they have ‘business decisions’ as the cornerstone of their implementation. The starting point to build / re-engineer a BI system is to identify the business decisions taken by business stakeholders in their sphere of operations. Business decisions can be operational in nature (taken on a daily basis) and/or strategic (taken more infrequently but they tend to have a longer term impact). To reiterate, the starting point for BI is to catalog the business decisions taken by business stakeholders and collect the artifacts that are currently used to take those decisions.

Q: The starting point is fine – What are the other pieces?

A: The next step is to identify the metrics and key performance indicators that support decision making. In other words, any metric identified should be unambiguously correlated to the decision taken with the help of that metric and by whom. Next we need to identify the core datasets in the organization. Please refer to my earlier blog post titled ‘Thinking by Datasets’  on this subject.

Q: What about the operational systems in the landscape? Aren’t they important?

A: Once we have documented the relationship between Business Decisions to Metrics to Datasets, we need to focus on the transactional applications. The key focus items are:

  • Inventory of all Transactional Applications
  • Identify the business process catered by these applications
  • Identify the datasets generated as part of each of business process
  • Next step is to drill-down into individual entities that make up each of the datasets
  • Once the Facts & Dimensions are identified from the entities, sketch out the classic ‘Bus Matrix’ which would form the basis for dimensional data modeling

Q: All this is good if we are building a BI system from scratch – How about existing BI systems?

A: For existing BI applications, the above mentioned process could be carried out as a health-check on the BI landscape. The bottomline is that every single report / dashboard / any other analytical component should have traceability into the metrics shown which should then link to the decisions taken by business users. BI & Analytics exist to help organizations take better business decisions and that defines its purpose & role in an enterprise IT landscape.

The answers mentioned above provide the high-level view of Hexaware’s approach to Business Intelligence projects. We have worked with many organizations across industries and a business focused analytical approach has provided good value for our customers.

Thanks for reading. Please do share your thoughts.

Business Focused Analytics – The Starting Point – Part 2

Business decisions are the cornerstone of a successful BI implementation. Cataloging the decisions taken by the key stakeholders in an organization is the first step in understanding the information requirements for a data warehouse. Capturing business decisions – strategic and operational, is not a simple task as most business decisions tend to be complex requiring diverse data points. Further, when all decisions are collected, how will we know the decisions that have the most impact on the business?

Here’s a simple framework based on the six primitive interrogatives that Hexaware has effectively used while assessing information requirements. This framework helps systematically uncover important dimensions of information and organize them in a format that is easy to comprehend.

Question Description Comments Example
Who? The decision-maker Stakeholder Service Delivery Manager (SDM)
What? The decision A decision requiring supporting data / information Resourcing for a project
Why? The motivation for the decision The significance of the decision to the business Getting the right project team is critical to the success of a services project.
When? When is the decision made frequency (or) a point in time Made during the planning stage and reviewed at periodic intervals
How? The basis for making the decision – KPI / metrics / a logic the metrics and datasets required for making the decision By comparing the skill set requirement and project schedule in the Project plan to the  availability of resources (HR and PMO databases) with the right skills (skills database) and good track record (appraisal database)
Where? The place where the decision is made Specifies mobility /  additional access requirement This information needs to be accessed through extranet

Depending on the stakeholder (mostly), the decisions could be strategic or operational. A manager responsible for carrying out a business process will have an operational view of information and will be making operational decisions relating to his/her sphere of operations.  Decisions taken by top management personnel with longer-term business responsibilities tend to be more strategic.  The above framework helps capture both strategic and operational decisions along with the datasets required to make the decisions.

Successfully capturing the decisions and the relevant metrics and the datasets is only half the story in the assessment for a data warehouse. Let’s reserve the other half for a subsequent blog.

Hope this information was useful. Please do share your comments/suggestions.

Quality Assurance and Testing Services: Strategy of Oracle BI Testing

This Document gives an overview of OBIEE Testing and commonly used in BI Components while doing validation.

1. Testing in Levels: In a typical OBIEE project, it is advisable to test in multiple areas rather than attempting to test everything at once.

a) The first set of tests can verify the accuracy of the column to column transport of the data between the source and target. This verification is typically done using SQL statements on the source and target databases.

b) The next step is to verify the accuracy of the repository (the .RPD file.) These tests will include testing with appropriate dimensional filters on the metrics and the formula used to compute those metrics. Testers can build two sets of comparable queries within the repository interface.

c) The next step in testing will be to verify the dashboard / reports against comparable queries on repository metrics. In these tests, testers verify dashboard charts / reports against corresponding results from queries they execute on metrics of the repository.

d) Finally, the functional interface tests will cover tests to verify the lookups, performance, ease of use, look and feel etc.

The first three types of tests are performed by testers who can create simple SQL statements.

Structure and organization of test cases:

The choices on test cases naming convention and structure can help organize the test artifacts better and aid a great deal in implementing the overall testing strategy.

For example: If the test cases are grouped based on the nature of the tests, like, source to target verification, RPD metrics tests, functional, security, performance and usability, it would be easier to pick and choose the tests based on the testing context and tester capabilities.

1. User acceptance criteria:
Users typically have an existing legacy mechanism to verify if what is displayed in the new solution makes sense. Testers should dig into this and understand how the end users built the project acceptance criteria. Testers should challenge the assumptions made by the business community in deriving the acceptance criteria. This activity helps get an end user perspective built into the testing efforts from early on.

2. Validating Master Detail Report:
Master Details linking of views allows you to establish a relationship between two or more views such that one view, called the master view, will drive data changes in one or more other views, called detail views.

3. Time series functions validation: Time series functions provide the ability to compare business performance with previous time periods, allowing you to analyze data that spans multiple time periods.

Time series functions enable comparisons between current sales and sales a year ago, a month ago, and so on.

a. Ago: With ago function we can compare period to period
b. To date: Time series functions enable comparisons between current sales and sales a year ago, a month ago, and so on.
c. Period rolling: The PERIODROLLING function does not have a time series grain; instead, you specify a start and end period in the function.

4. Oracle bi-publisher validation: Oracle BI Publisher known as XML Publisher offers efficient scalable reporting solution available for complex, distributed environments. It provides a central architecture for generation and delivering information to employees', customer and business partners both security and in the right format.

Quality Assurance And Testing Services: OBIEE Validations

Hexaware has developed a variety of accelerators that combine Oracle's technology with Hexaware's functional and technical expertise to effectively meet your business needs. Oracle E-business suite range consists of financials, supply chain, manufacturing, HRMS & CRM.

Source to target validation: Here source is represented by metadata repository and Target represents OBIEE Reports & Dashboards, BI Publishers.

1. Presentation layer object validation:
This is the layer of the logical business model that is accessible for the client through the structure query Language better known as the logical SQL. The presentation is the appropriate layer to set user permissions and to validate user permissions to reports.

2. Categorizing the metrics:
It is important to classify the metrics from multiple perspectives such as, their frequency of use, potential performance impacts, and complexity of calculations involved. Such a classification helps drive priority of testing

3. Dashboard charts and filters criteria:
User interface testing should encompass tests with multiple options in the available filter criteria. OBIEE gives enough drilldown features to verify the underlying data on the clickable components of the charts. Test cases written should be detailed enough to verify data aggregated at various layers.

4. Filter Validation
. Validate the entire filters which are available on report. Example refers below report and its filter
. Example: For Performance Measure filter- Validate filter contents against report requirement and database

Filter types:
Local filters: Filtering the records in the report level.
Global filters: Filtering the records based on user selection in Dashboard.

Dashboard Validation:
When a user selects certain request that need to display the exact results in the dashboard.

5. Data level security:
Data level security validation means user will be able to see only particular data for the given permission
Example: Both the Eastern and Western region Sales Managers will be seeing the same reports but the Data visible to them in the reports will be Eastern and Western region Sales data respectively.

Object Level security: Need to validate whether the particular user is able to access the particular dashboard or folder etc.
Example: For example, users in a particular department can view only the subject areas that belong to their department.

6. Bursting the reports:
Bursting the reports means distributing the reports based on the regions.
Example: If there are 4 regional reports, validate to burst the reports (based on East, West, South, North regions).

7. Buzz Matrix validation:
Need to validate the alerts in the Dashboard.

Example: We are running stock market and CEO is very much interested to know today's business weather, has it reached a certain level that which he expects compared to the last week. If the level has reached to a certain level in Dashboard Buzz (Alert), it should raise an alert saying that it has reached the level in such a way the buzz matrix validates.

IIS Server through the eyes of an SEO

Internet Information Services (IIS) is the second most popular web server in the world to Apache. IIS’s first big gig was in 1995 and still continues to power a massive portion of the internet today. Read more about Microsoft's history on the web

  • You’ll likely have a client sooner or later that uses IIS
  • There are some common SEO faults with IIS that you need to know
  • Fixing those default "faults" can significantly improve the site's SEO
  • You need to understand how this beast works before you say “301” or “clean URL”
  • I will show you how to get a free kickass crawler – You need Windows 7 on your machine
  • If you can speak IIS, those super smart developers will instantly warm up to you
  • IIS popularity is growing (see image below)

IIS trends

IIS isn’t going anywhere, in fact it’s growing. Whether you appreciate Microsoft products or not, there are many that do and there’s no doubt that you’ll likely have to consult a client running IIS.

Requirements: Windows 7 (automatically comes with IIS 7.5)Sorry Mac! – muhahaha
How: IIS server & SEO toolkit on your Windows 7 machine
Why: It’s frickin incredible – It will make your SEO life much much easier.
Difficulty: Easy
Estimated Completion time: 5-7 minutes

Why it's so cool!

Watch this video, and tell me you DON'T need this beast :)

  • Reports on content, SEO and other violations. Tells you how to fix it in plain english
  • You can add your own custom violations
  • Fully functional database of what's going on with your site
  • Tons and tons of custom reporting, including mapping navigation paths
  • Find orphaned pages from Sitemap
  • And much much more. You expected that right :)

We can get you up and running in 10 minutes (minimum requirements): follow these instructions– this is EASY.

First, install IIS Server

  1. Start > Settings > Control Panel
  2. Programs & Features
  3. Click on "Turn Windows Features on/off"
  4. Find the Internet Information Services folder, expand it
  5. Expand the Web Management tools folder
  6. Make sure IIS Management Console is checked, click OK

Next, the IIS toolkit - Post here with screenshots

  1. Download the IIS Web Platform Installer, and install it
  2. Click on Start, search for "Web platform installer", open it up
  3. Once in the web platform, type in "SEO" in the search bar - top right
  4. It should be the last item in the list "Search Engine Optimisation Toolkit", click add, then install
  5. Click on start, type in: inetmgr
  6. Look for the Icon that says "Search Engine Optimisation Toolkit", and double click
  7. You're done! You now have an insane, free crawler on your machine :)

Now you need to:

  1. Crawl a site!
  2. Understand the analysis!
  3. Enjoy, you'll love it :)

Read Microsoft's official instructions for the IIS SEO toolkit

Read more about this here. Example of a default document: www.example.com/index.html www.example.com - will return the same content, different URLs

  • Case insensitive
  • IIS by default will serve the same content regardless of casing Example: www.example.com/BLOG and www.example.com/blog are the same content, different URLs
  • Works with www and non www (site canonicalization)
  • By default, like most servers you'll get the same content from www.example.com and example.com

Why it’s a problem: You get a hard earned inbound link to the wrong URL and it doesn’t give you full credit – “but it’s the same page!” No, it’s not, and no, Google doesn’t magically fix this even though they try.

But hey! No one is going to link to your site like this! Right? cc Matt Cutts 2006

  • example.com/
  • www.example.com/index.html
  • example.com/INDEX.html

Yes, yes they do. Not on purpose, but they do.

This is a very real problem for older, larger sites that hadn’t canonicalized their domain, or bothered with consistent URL structure in the past. Fast forward to 2011 and we SEOs start nitpicking for every bit of link juice and we notice that we’re missing out on all of these external links because we’re not redirecting these inbound links to the right pages. We need to write some permanent redirect rules to catch these.

Simple, right? When someone links to our real page www.example.com/blog/ like this: example.com/Blog

We just do a 301 redirect back to www.example.com/blog/ ! Happy days right? Please continue…

It’s best to explain this by example. Open up this page from Cheapflights.co.uk.

Notice the capital L (london)? What happens when we request http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/london/?

Brilliant! Even if someone incorrectly links to the lowercase version, we get a 301 redirect to the correct page http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/London/

Here’s where I get crazy. Let’s say I decide to link to http://cheapflights.co.uk/flights/london

I want you to notice a couple of things here:

  1. No www
  2. London is london
  3. Monitor the http requests, try HTTPFOX for FireFox

Whoa! Two 301 redirects! We know one 301 loses link juice, but 2?The point here is that Google is far less likely to pass on PageRank with each chained redirect, you should always aim for no more than one 301 redirect.

This is referred to as chaining 301 redirects (My example is specific to IIS)

Why is this happening?

When you are creating redirect rules, the server usually obeys each condition depending on what it finds. As a good SEO, you should always canonicalise the domain – as a smart SEO you’ll probably want to stop any uppercasing goofs too, maybe even trailing slashes while you’re at it!

My obsession – I noticed this all over the web and I was obsessed with finding the “catch all” redirect rule that would only redirect once, to the right URL.

I failed, until I got some very clever friends involved. Meet Daniel Furze, developer at Reed.co.uk.

A way to fix the chain for common SEO issues

I'm nicknaming this the "Furze Method" :) This method has been tried and tested, so we know it works. You should add this rule base in web.config for a .net app. Learn more here.

We're using IIS 7 and the url rewrite 2.0 module here which allows us to run regex rules against different parts of the url and then either Redirect or Rewrite them. The ability to rewrite is what I'm using to make sure we keep 301 chaining to a minimum. It allows us to run several rules against the url, cleaning it up in stages before doing one final Redirect. The trick to this is that when a rewrite rule matches and it does it's job it adds a _ to the path of the url. The final rules look for any path beginning with _ and will then strip this out and redirect. Let's have a look at the rules and then break them down in to sections.

Section 1

The first rule is very important here as there is no need to be cleaning up resource requests (remember all requests pass through here including image, css and js files with an integrated pipe).

Section 2

The 2nd section of 3 rules will tidy up different parts of the url

  1. remove default.aspx, since we are using .net we want to clean up any stray default.aspx from the path (less important with a greenfield mvc app), you can change this rule for any other document types that you like including index.html.
  2. clean up trailing slashes from the path of the url ie www.yoursite.com/news/ becomes www.yoursite.com/news
  3. lowercase the whole path part of the url, the querystring isn't touched as these are often case sensitive so www.yoursite.com/News becomes www.yoursite.com/news

Section 3

The 3rd part is a little more tricky, this is the part that does the actual Redirect but it is also responsible for one last tidy-up as well. The first 2 rules will fix missing www and then redirect while also respecting the port the requested url was using ie http://yoursite.com becomes http://www.yoursite.com and the same for https. The reason these 2 rules are separate is that I haven't figured out how to add www without also specifying either http or https. The 3rd rule will do a redirect if any of the SEO Rewrite rules caught but the url already had www in it. You can see that these last 3 rules pay attention to _ which might be in the path from the previous rewrite rules.

One final gotcha is to make sure you don't actually have any geniune urls that begin with _ , if you do then you can substitute this for another special character but you will have to make sure it all still works. And also to pay attention to which ones have stopProcessing="true" on them, typically a Redirect will stop and a SEO rewrite will carry on. If you are wanting to put in any other rules for say redirecting email links or migrating old pages to new pages then I would recommend putting them in between any Whitelist rules you have and the SEO rules at the bottom.

The final result is a very mangled url like:

http://yoursite/NeWs/default.aspx?id=123 will redirect to http://www.yoursite/news?id=123 with only one 301.

You can see how it works live here..please disregard the domain name!http://a4uexpobavarianbeerandsausageonstand50.org/ArTIcle/

You'll notice that our non www, uppercase and trailing slash version 301's to http://www.a4uexpobavarianbeerandsausageonstand50.org/article with one 301! Cool!

Mark Ridley is the Head of Development & an IIS expert at Reed and a personal friend of mine that I called for help. Oh feel free to bug him on Twitter, just say I told you to :)

I need to 301 redirect page A to page B, how can we do this?

Dave: This is fairly easy, we won't reinvent the wheel - please see detail instructions here. Updated: Another great resource (full tutorial) has been discovered thanks to Alan in the comments

We are migrating a site and we know which pages to redirect to, can you send us the rewrite map template so we can fill it out? (Basically explain that the Devs could send a rewrite map template and then just apply rules)

Dave: Yes, it is possible. Get a developer to send you a template, use this resource here.

How will ASP, .net, PHP react to our redirect rules? Are there any common pitfalls?

IIS URL Rewrite rules will execute before any rewrites or redirects that your application insists upon. There are some very technical reasons for this. Essentially, the web server thinks it's more important than your code, which is probably correct. The only pitfalls to watch out for, exactly as with Apache, is that you're making sensible rules on the web server. It is a little bit too easy to make infinite redirect loops, or at least very long chains of redirects that won't make you popular with search engines

Is there anything Apache can do that IIS can't?

There's WAY better community support for Apache, and a much wider adoption. That doesn't mean that IIS has poor support, just that the number of articles telling you about Apache is going to outnumber IIS by orders of magnitude, partially why this article is important. Other than that - yes, some Apache modules make Apache do things that IIS can't, but there aren't many things that will trouble the 80% of 'normal' users.

Do you prefer IIS or Apache? Why?

I refuse to get involved in a religious argument! Both are very capable web servers (number 1 and 2 in the market according to Netcraft), and often the decision to use one or the other is not based on the capability of the web server itself. Microsoft houses will use IIS and Free/Open Source or *nix houses will use Apache (or nginx). It doesn't hurt anyone to understand both, especially as your client will have made the decision to use one or the other, and probably won't want to change. It's enough to know that both are sensible choices depending on your reasons.

How can I speed up page load time with IIS?

IIS, like Apache's mod_rewrite, allows you to turn on gzip compression of both static and dynamic content. It's a very simple change that will make a massive difference to your page download speed, and your bandwidth costs! This was added in IIS7 and was a long overdue feature. All modern browsers support content compression, and there is almost no downside to enabling it.

A more technical, and complex solution is also available in addition to content compression, which is output caching (http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/710/configure-iis-7-output-caching/). This is probably something best left to the developers and server administrators to argue over, as whilst it can have benefits they are less obvious and harder to achieve than compression.

Can you easily give me log files? What information can I get? What software do you recommend to parse the logs?

Of course! IIS logs just the same way Apache does - writing log files into a folder. You can use exactly the same format as Apache, or several other popular web log formats, which are simple configuration options in IIS. Log parsing is often now less common with the massive improvements in online services, such as Google Analytics, Webtrends or Omniture. With Google Analytics being free, you're in a position to do away with pesky logs and let your marketeers do the analysis without worrying about the underlying technology. The free 'Live' view which is currently in Beta in GA is also amazing, and will sell itself to execs and marketing folk, as they can see who is on your site right at the moment. If you want a little more detail from your own logs for a reasonable price, I've often used Sawmill to great effect. AWStats is also popular with the more technical FOS community.

Can you explain (basic) how you set up a dev server and then deploy to live? (what are common issues)?

This is enormously variable based on your server architecture, your connections and your technical decisions. On a Microsoft stack, Microsoft provide tools such as Web Farm Framework and Web Deploy which can be a great help and offer a lot of heavy lifting. Some people with simpler sites are happy with FTP or WebDAV deployments. We use our own cocktail of Powershell scripts and Robocopy to manage our servers and keep them up to date, but we won't test you on that afterwards.

How can you define a custom 404 page easily?

IIS has standard support for all the common (and any custom) error pages. The easiest route is to create an HTML page with your 404 content and save it to a folder on your live servers. In the IIS configuration, you then simply locate this page and IIS will do the rest. With more complex ASP.NET MVC sites, you may want to handle your own 404s, bug again that's best left to the developers.

Can you explain how to make friendly (SEO) urls in IIS? What is the process?

Exactly the same way as with any other web server! Name your content well. Avoid special characters, use lower case filenames, be consistent with naming, use slugs where possible to make URLs that search engines will appreciate. If you're writing an application which pulls content from a database, make the URLs as meaningful as possible and avoid varied query strings. All of this is second nature for good SEOs. ASP.NET (or any other flavour) MVC helps even more as the URL routing allows the developers more control of exactly what the URL will look like, rather than having to rely only on filenames. If you use a content management system, make sure that you know how to configure correctly - most popular CMS products have this boiled in these days.

What do you mean by rewriting as opposed to redirecting?

In simple terms, imagine you have two files - a.htm and b.htm.

If you are using rewriting, someone will look at a.htm in a browser (and the address bar will still show http://site.com/a.htm), but you will actually see the content of b.htm.

If you are using the more common redirect method, when someone asks for a.htm with their browser, they will be sent to b.htm in the server. The address bar will now show http://www.site.com/b.htm For SEO purposes, this means that a spider won't be able to tell the difference between a.htm and b.htm if you're rewriting. If you're redirecting, you can give powerful instructions to the spider, such as a 301 response, asserting that the value of the b.htm should now be carried to a.htm. In most cases, you probably only need to worry about using redirects, as these are widely used and understood. Rewriting is often an edge case, or something used by developers for their own nefarious purposes.

Give me a good reason why I should use IIS 7 over previous versions?

IIS7 - now actually IIS7.5 in Windows 2008 R2 - was a huge improvement over IIS6. Native support for gzip compression, the newly integrated ASP.NET pipeline and performance and security improvements should be enough. If not, Windows 2008 is a far nicer Operating System to use than 2003 (now it's been patched a few times), and migrating will make your life a much more pleasant place to be. Do watch out for slow file copying though, a relic of it's Windows Vista brethren.
